Several weeks ago “The Watertown Daily Times” published an article regarding the need for a new roof for the Watertown Humane Society Shelter building. At that time, the members of the Board of Directors for the Humane Society were hoping for several donations large enough to cover the cost of the shingles and other materials to re-roof the building. However, the money was not received, and the Board members “felt it unwise to go ahead with the project until more money is in hand,” according to Board President Karen Koenig.

New Roof Status Update

The project is ongoing, Koenig stated, but will actually not be done until there are enough donations to cover the cost of the materials. Area roofers and volunteers had agreed to donate their time and talents to the project, and the Humane Society is very grateful for their selfless acts. The Board is hoping that the project to re-do the entire roof of the building can be accomplished by the end of summer.

“Many times in the past, animal lovers and supporters of the Shelter have helped us in times of need,” Koenig said. “We are again hoping that people will help us put a new roof on the building, which is fifteen years old. The Shelter may get some money back for the shingles failing before the warranty was up, but it is uncertain as to how much money and how soon it would come back from the manufacturing company.” Costs for materials will run approximately $5000, and labor costs would be above and beyond that.

How and Where You Can Donate

Donations for the roofing project may be sent or brought to the Watertown Humane Society at 418 Water Tower Court in Watertown at any time during business hours. You may also donate online from our website by clicking the roof donation button located on the right side of our website. Any and all donations will be gratefully accepted for the sake of the animals, and contributions to the Shelter, which is a 501(c)(3) organization, are tax deductible.

Wisconsin Avenue in Oconomowoc. The bakery features natural dog and cat treats and other gifts.

This is the 2nd year that the shop has run “Give a Dog a Home”, which allows many rescue groups and shelter representatives to earn money by participation. The sale of “Give a Dog a Home Treats” is part of the fundraiser, but there will be many fun events such as paw print art and painting your own dog and cat bowls. A demonstration of “Lion Cut” grooming will be done, as well as those of nail trimming and ear cleaning. There will also be a live ultrasound demonstration by Hallett Veterinary Hospital, raffles, and silent auction items.

Along with the Watertown Humane Society, participants in the fund-raising event will include the Lakeland Animal Welfare Society, the Greyhound Pets of America, Wisconsin Rottweiler Rescue, and New Spirit for Aussie Rescue. “The Doggy Bag” owners will split the day’s profits between the participating rescue groups and shelters.

You may bring your own dog for “Outdoor Yappy Hour” and a donation of food to help families with pets in need will be appreciated.

On Saturday February 27, 2010, the Watertown Humane Society will host a microchipping clinic from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at the Shelter which is located at 418 Water Tower Court in Watertown. The cost for microchipping is $20.00 per dog, cat or other pet.

For the safety of all animals and owners all dogs must be on a leash and all cats must be in a carrier.

Microchipping will be done on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the clinic.

Any questions can be answered by calling the Watertown Humane Society at (920) 261-1270

About Micro-Chipping

Microchipping is used to identify animals that are lost, stray, or are stolen. It consists of a small chip placed between the shoulder blades of a dog or cat, implanted by a 20-gauge needle. The chip itself is only the size of a grain or rice and holds a unique pre-programmed code that can be identified and read by a hand-held scanner. Veterinarians, animal shelters, and some breed rescue groups own these scanners. The chips are “universal”, which means that the scanner will detect a microchip from any of the microchipping companies.

The Watertown Humane Society uses chips from 24 PetWatch, and all animals adopted out from the Watertown shelter are microchipped as part of the adoption package, along with any testing and treatment necessary for the animal’s welfare. The process is very quick and nearly painless for a dog or cat, although there may be a slight swelling of the skin or a small amount of bleeding on any thin-skinned animal.

Qualified personnel will place the chips so that your dog or cat can be identified in case it is lost, has strayed, or is stolen.

The Watertown Humane Society, working with the Dane County Humane Society Shelter Outreach Services (“SOS”) offers Spay and Neuter Clinics for dogs and cats. This service is meant to cut down the number of unwanted kittens and puppies. It is especially appropriate in this difficult economic climate, as the fees are less than half of what these procedures would cost at most veterinary clinics.

A licensed veterinarian and several technicians from the Madison area bring all the equipment necessary to perform twenty-six spay and neuter surgeries in the course of one day.

Animals must be dropped off at the Shelter early in the morning the day of the clinic, and may be picked up between 5:30 and 6 p.m. the same day. You may bring them in beginning at 7:30a.m.

Plan to spend approximately 15 minutes chatting with the vet about your pet’s general health, distemper and rabies vaccinations prior to dropping off your pet. This consultation is required by State law.

Your furkid will given an examination by the vet before they have surgery, and distemper and rabies vaccines are given, as well as antibiotics and pain medications after the surgery.

All animals coming to the clinics must each be in their own individual crate or carrier for the safety of all animals and workers. Surgeries must be prepaid and a consent form must be signed at the Shelter before animals are placed on the list for neuters and spays.

“Don’t Litter—Spay and Neuter!”

Reservations will not be accepted without pre-payment.

Note: Our October Spay-Neuter Clinic will be the last one in 2010 as the rest of the customary dates fall on Holidays.

Services include: exam, sterilization, distemper and rabies vaccine.

Cat Neuter – $50.00
