Our goal is to try to keep the pets in our care as healthy as we can. Feeding different brands and varieties of food can cause pets to experience (sometimes painful) digestive problems and/or become ill. Keeping as much consistency in their diets as we can during the time pets reside at our shelter helps keep them healthy.
Rather than filling food dishes straight from the bags of an assortment of food brands currently on hand, all pet foods are poured into large individual containers (cat, kitten, dog and puppy) and then mixed. This “food dump” process helps alleviate some diet related health issues.
A key factor in the food dump is to use one single brand of food as the base for mixing all foods. Most pets tolerate Purina brand foods and so this is what we use as our base which means we need to keep a large supply of it on hand.
We very much appreciate all donations! You may certainly donate any variety of dry food that you wish, choosing Purina products to donate is not a requirement.
Some Benefits of the Food Dump
The dogs and cats we care for at our shelter are already scared and stressed out. Many of them come to us with existing health issues. Having to mix many brands of foods is not ideal but it’s better than a random or food rotation method. Utilizing a single brand as a base helps alleviate some of the issues involved in the need to mix brands.
Keeping our base food needs in mind when you purchase foods to donate is helpful toward our efforts to get and keep these homeless needy pets as healthy as possible. It helps minimize our veterinary costs, the time it takes our shelter employees and volunteers to care for animals that are ill and it assists in the adopted pet’s transition to the diet it will sustain after it moves into its new home.
When and Where to Donate
Pet food donations may be brought to the shelter during shelter business hours which are listed near the bottom of our home page. If you have any questions regarding cat or kitten food donations, please contact us by phone 920-261-1270 or by visiting our contact page.
